Define the Enemy
The head louse is a persistent, wingless parasite which nests in the scalp and feeds on human blood. A single louse has a lifespan of around 33 days, during which it will feed, mate, and lay eggs. Typically, many lice will form a community, or “infestation” in the scalp.

Watch For the Warning Signs
Although head lice are not a serious health concern, they quickly become a nuisance. You may experience some of the following:
- Itching of the scalp
- Small red bumps and sores
- Swelling of the nymph glands
- Rash, with swelling and oozing
Because they’re so small, head lice are often difficult to spot. It’s easiest to look for the nits (eggs) at the hair root. Nits look something like yellow or gray dandruff and will not come out by simple brushing.
Understand Their Tactics
It’s true, head lice are extremely contagious. They are capable of living separate from the scalp for up to three days. During this period, they seek a warm environment for shelter (head lice cannot live at room temperature), and are usually transferred via shared items like mattresses, combs, and hats. This makes children and teenagers the most susceptible victims, since social situations often allow this kind of sharing. It’s best to simply avoid such items. (NOTE: Pets cannot transfer head lice to humans, nor can humans transfer head lice to pets.) ![]()

Thanks for the tip. Never heard of soapberry but will look it up on the net. Hope this is helpful for some folks. Green eco friendly is a good thing.
